Didn't really write much last month, eh? Someone hit me with a nasty flu that I've been dealing with for the better part of the last two weeks... as well as the holiday season, family, some legal matters, etc, etc. What I'm getting at is, there's more coming in the following months. Other than my gift exchange I didn't get any card related stuffs from the holidays, but I did score a Zelda themed Wii-U, a few games(New Super Mario Bros. U, Super Mario 3D Land - LOVE the cat-suit, Wind Waker Wii=U HD remake, A Link Between Worlds), and the usual socks/sweaters from the extended family. Now if this nasty cough would go away...

Card related stuffs
So this happened. Yes, I like to send Bip packages - I guess Scott Crawford didn't warn the Night Owl.... 1, 2. Three other people got near-Christmas Eve timed card packages, most with similar Bip-age(Bippage?). I won(!) a NFL box from Topps on the twatters - look for a post about that soon enough. Also got a nice package from Fernando again, which I need to send him his pile at some point... Mentioned in the extremely(!) knowledgeable ClassicMNTwins' blog. Found several clips on Youtube with old All-Star games, portions of 70s games, as well as the oldest, fully-preserved game video, from 1967 featuring the Twins/Red Sox season ending series. Killer, Carew, Tovar, Tony-O... Ugh. That should have been our year(or you know, 2006. M&M boys, Cuddy, Cy-tana, Bradke, Kubes...).
No box shots. Probably should have gotten one, but I was too excited to crack it open. The first thing I noticed, was the address was from someone whom I had just sent a much-delayed package completing a previous trade. In explaining he stated that the huge stack of 1991 Fleers would have given it away, as that was going to be part of our next trade...

Coaching staffs, team photos, Metrodome, my mouse... Love the first year coach card of Tom Kelly. I was excited I would finally have a player card for Kelly in Twins jersey, but was "disappointed" when the back said coach. Still searching for my first player-TK card.

The 1991 Fleer stack mentioned earlier. As the Twins won the series that year, and 1987, I've always wanted the complete sets from each of the major brands. I vividly remember these from when I first started my collection in the early 90s. This set and 1990 Score really stood out as a youngster.

The real highlight for me, my second certified Kent Hrbek autograph. Included in the set was a near complete Panini Hometown Heroes team set, which at some point I might grab a box. I really like the throw back retro 70s/80s design.

Also in the package were these from 1986/87 - I've been meaning to pick these up from Amazon at some point. In addition to ancient coupons(though no expiration!) for Surf, the books also include pictures of nearly all the Twins cards for each year 1952 to print year. I noticed a few missing, namely leaderboard cards, cards with father/son or flashback/forward inserts, and playoff cards. Still really cool!

Photo album below. None of them appear to be in Minnesota, leaving a four game set June 24th-26th, with a double-header on the 26th, and September 19th-21st. Interesting, that the double-header features two players that share Oakland and Minnesota players on the card. But first, one of my favorite back of a card photos. One of the first sets to put an emphasis on photography, a staple of UD's line for years to come. The set was not without errors however, as cards #1-100(or 2-101 depending on source) can be found with either a ® or a ™. I thought you would need a microscope to see them originally, but the circle on the ® makes it stand out very visibly.
How's about this one for a quick funsies post? 1990 Donruss' team MVP sub-set.

In addition to the et-wide error, the line where it says ALL-STAR GAME PERFORMANCE, for each, has a version that looks like this:

Twins Cameo Series 4

I barely caught this, but check out the shoulder patch on the fielder's arm. Definitely a Twin player. I did my usual baseball-reference detective work, and have this down to a single play again. Willie's career was winding down in 1990, and played for two teams - @ourtradingcards' A's whom are pictured, and started the year with @NightOwlCards' Dodgers. 1990 was also Willie's only year with the Athletics, playing in 93 games for the eventual World Series losers. Suck it Ben! :D.

Eitherway, in the sixth with Paul Abbott pitching, Willie broke for second and beat out the throw by Junior Ortiz. There was some debate on twitter regarding whether that's Al Newman or Nelson Liriano - but that's a wash as Newman was a late game replacement, and Willie never batted afterwards. Nelson Liriano's arm there folks. Game log.

Speaking of Al Newman though, this is definitely Al Newman. This was not the same game as above, but it was the day afterwards - Game log. Willie reached base in the third on a single, only to be thrown out in a 5-4-3 inning ending double-play. Newman started this game, and Randolph appears to be out on the play.

I think I may need a new hobby.musicfan87http://www.blogger.com/profile/06103605773602526887noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7773482446793633722.post-76970735518371840492013-11-11T18:07:00.001-08:002013-11-11T18:16:44.007-08:00Scribbles and dirty laundrySince being introduced in the mid-90s, relics autos and manufactured junk has re-vitalized a dead hobby. Like it or not, most people are supar-mojo hit chasers(it hurt to type that..). I'd like to think I have a huge Twins collection, and just wanted to share a few of my favorites here.
What's not to like? I'm trying to collect different player "letter" type cards to spell out my name, this was one of my first additions. Love the huge patch style on this compared to others.
Speaking of Nick's, I pulled this thinking I needed it for my Topps team set, only saw the faint pen auto when I was sorting it into my team box.
I'd like to find the other variations with less/more relic cuts. Apparently there's versions with one relic, two, three(obviously..) and a fourth relic with the different #/serial levels.
These Killebrew, Oliva, Carew relics all look faded, a nice historical touch. Much better than bland white squares from recent players... #ThanksTopps
Yet another Twin, this time judging by the helmet, Ben Revere(Come home Benny!). The outfield walls look like both Jacobs Field(because really..I'm not calling it whatever it is now.) and Target Field. But judging by this - Cleveland Indians Home/Away jersey info, this was in Cleveland. So, checking both Revere's and Cabrera's BRef pages, both being in the lineup, these happened 8 times in 2012. June 1-3rd, August 6-8, and September 18-19th.

June 1st, Revere went 0-4 in a nasty lopsided affair, three ground ball outs, and a fly ball caught in center. August 8th, Revere went 0-5, with two ground outs, a strikeout, a fly ball caught in center(again...). September 19th, Revere was a defensive replacement late in the game(bottom 9th), and never batted in the Twins 6-4 victory.

Taking these out, there are five dates that this photo could have come from, June 2-3rd, August 6-7th, and September 18th. On June 2nd, all the starting Twins had a hit except Jamey Carroll. While Revere did reach 2nd in the 1st inning, it wasn't a close play as Joe Mauer hit a ground ball past the defense, and Justin Morneau would drive him in later in the inning. Following consecutive ground outs, Revere would reach base in the 9th on a wild pitch, and even get thrown out as part of a double play, but Cabrera started the play, and was not covering second. June 2nd - eliminated.

The next day, June 3rd, Revere only went 1-5, with one walk, several ground outs and a strikeout. In the 7th after consecutive ground outs to the pitcher, Revere hit a "bunt" on the first base/pitcher side and was called safe on the play. He wound up stealing second, and was doubled in by Josh Willingham'mer. In his last at-bat of the day, he ground out to second. June 3rd - eliminated.

After a strikeout looking on August 6th, Benny blooped a single to center, scoring Carroll and advancing Denard Span to third. Mauer drove him in, in the next at-bat. No dice here, but the Twins did light up Cleveland pitching for 10 runs in the inning! In the fourth, Revere hit a single, and was the duck on the pond for Morneau's 200th homer! In the sixth, he singled, and Mauer drove him in with a double, and in his last at-bat of the night he would end up at third after a single, Mauer's single, and advancing on Willingham's grounder out. August 6th - eliminated.

We're getting closer, on August 7th, Revere singled in the 1st, took second on Mauer's walk and would score on Morneau's deep center single. After a foul fly ball out, Revere was walked, and was part of a double play(!), one that went second, to the shortstop covering second(Cabrera!!), to first(!!!). 4-6-3, we may have a winner. He finished the game with three ground outs. August 7th - Likely/Possible!

Finally September 18th, Ben only hit 1-5, with both a walk and a strike out. In the first he had a bunt hit, advanced to 3rd on Mauer's single and scored on a Morneau fly out. Two grounders, a K looking, and another ground out, Revere was walked in the 11th. Except Mauer couldn't beat out a infield single and was thrown out at first to end the inning. In the 12th, the Twins would break the tie-game, and despite Glen Perkins allowing a homer to Carlos Santana, the game was finished. Twins win 6-5.

<strike>So, by all of this, this photo could only have occurred August 7th, 2012. Here's the MLB write-up for the game. Despite all the videos, even with two nice stops by Cabrera, this play isn't recorded - except by a nice Topps photo.</strike>
<strike>
</strike>
Update: fail. I probably should have compared any of the videos to the photo to triple verify the jersey. It was pointed out on twitter by @digitalHaas that they're wearing their home blue jerseys, and the video confirms that. Look for an update to the update when I check their 2011 seasons...

That looks like a Twins player to me. The 'M' is on the classic Twins road uniform that is one of my all-time favorites. Judging by the back of the player's uniform, the player's name ends in either an 'o' or a '0'. One of those is unlikely. I checked the 1991 Twins roster and found two players - Mike Pagliarulo, and Paul Sorrento. Sorrento only faced Baltimore once, in September, but didn't hit against Olson - in fact he homered in his one at-bat. Pags however faced Olson only twice, going 1-2 with an RBI. Got to love relief-pitchers, makes this so much easier to eliminate dates. Looking at his 1991 starts, Gregg Olson made four appearances against the Twins. I don't think that's the Metrodome, the base lines don't look right, and the color looks too much like an outdoor game. With his starts against Baltimore, in-Baltimore, Pags faced Olson on June 19th, 1991 and August 24th, 1991, and we can eliminate the August game because Pags was never on base, or at-bat while Olson was pitching. Just to make sure, I checked the game log for the June game, and Pags did indeed have a single up the 1B-2B side, with a throw to first likely coming in from the right fielder. Who's on first? Olson, or Baltimore's 1B that day, David Segui. On this particular play, June 19th, 1991, it appears Olson was on first.musicfan87http://www.blogger.com/profile/06103605773602526887noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7773482446793633722.post-80047251293065235342013-10-17T12:16:00.000-07:002013-10-17T12:16:09.757-07:00Speaking of 1972s...

1972 Topps Gene Michael and John Ellis. Neither are Twins, however they both have Twins pictured, and along with finding error cards and variations, another hobby of mine is to try and put a date on when photos were taken. So it's a given that these occurred during the 1971 season or before since these are cards in the 1972 set. Most likely 1971. Going by this the Twins played the Yankees twelve times in 1971, six at home, six in New York. As someone who never attended any games at old Yankee Stadium, I'm relying on the Gene Michael card, which based on the box score is in New York. Based on said box score, this game could only have occurred July 21st, 1971. Based on this great resource, #36 is Jim Kaat(who will be featured later this week) sliding into second. Looking at the play-by-play from the day, in the 8th Kaat hit his only single of the day, then stole second(!) with Rod Carew at-bat. While there's no way to officially without a doubt guarantee the John Ellis card was the same day. However, John Ellis did have a single in the bottom of the 7th, just before this play, and Killebrew(pictured) stayed in the game all the way until the 9th when he was pinch-ran for, a pinch-runner(Rich Reese) who scored the game winner. I'd like to think these were from the same game. :D.

In my postings on errors, I like to include the more common errors, differences that affect a good chunk of a release if not the entire set. For this week's post I'll take a look at the common errors found in 1990 Upper Deck.

There are two very common errors that affect most in this set, the first being cards that have missing hologram/foil on the back side; the second is much more rare(update 10/1/13, maybe not so much more rare, found another stack that was supposed to go with this post...), with a missing copyright on the back. From the first link above we see the cards that are missing the "Copyright 1990 Upper Deck Co. Printed in USA" run from cards #101-199, which is consistent to the cards that I found missing copyrights. I went through ~15,000 1990 Upper Deck before making this post pulling all versions of these that I could find. This is in no way indicative of all hoards of 1990 Upper Deck, just of the stock my LCS had in their backroom(most likely since 1990, hah). Of the boxes I found, one of the 5,000 count boxes had cards sorted numerically(five #1s, three #2s, four #3s, etc...), one box was sorted into four or five sets(cards #1-800), and the other had no rhyme or reason - completely random sorting(not numerical, not set, not by team/position/player...). Here's my findings:
So you can see why I like this search, there were several Twins found missing stuffs. It's actually how I first found out about these, card #493 caught my attempt while sorting one day. Other than the missing section there is nothing that stands these numbers apart from any other in the set. The fronts look as they are supposed to, it doesn't look like someone took an eraser to the card, they hold up to viewing them in the light... Very odd. Also odd, all of the ones that are missing the hologram/foil were cards that are in the #400-499 range. Strange times these be. Have you found any of these? Lemme know in the comments below?
I thought I'd compare and contrast the set vs. 2013 Topps. These team sets are relatively cheap, and can be found at your local Target/Walmart usually for 10$.

In addition to a different numbering scheme(MIN-1, MIN-2, etc.) some photos have been known to be different, or players that weren't in the base set are known to be in this team set, so I asked if he could pick me up a set. Interesting, I didn't notice any cropping or different photos used like NightOwl did for his 2008 Dodgers set. No, I don't have a Morneau from series 2, if anyone wants to ship me one? :D.

Let's look at the retail checklist and their 2013 Topps counter-part:
MIN-1 Joe Mauer - 107 Joe Mauer - Also has a photo variation short print.
Interesting that the backs have different "code". With the retail team set ending 3828, Base with 2820, and the short print ends in 3022.
I really did mean to get around to this, but I got sick, then distracted and lazy... so without further procrastination, here's my take on Donruss' heavy error/variation printing at it's height, from 1987-1992.

The Twins won the Series in a memorable home team takes all seven gamer, oh and almost 26 years to the date of this post(9/27), I was born. But enough about me, let's focus on a company that printed cardboard in my current city, Grand Prairie, Texas. With their '87 lineup, Donruss put out a drab black and yellow design with a set that included key rookies of Greg Maddux, Rafael Palmeiro, and a non-RC rookie for Mark McGwire. A relative cheap 660 card set with mostly commons sans those few key rookies, the first few cards were Diamond Kings as had become custom, followed by their Rated Rookie subset, then a slew of commons. Each pack came with a Roberto Clemente "Value Added®" puzzle piece, another staple of early Donruss releases. The only set wide varying condition regards the factory set vs. retail. The backs of cards from retail packs face one direction while factory sets face another.

1988 Donruss' design continued their bland run with blue and black checkerboard, or orange and black for the 'Baseball's Best' line. The Diamond Kings, Rated Rookies and puzzle pieces(Musial) all return for another year. A very weak set with the only notable rookie being Roberto Alomar, and even then my holy book lists the card for only 1$... I've yet to confirm this for the full set, but it seems Donruss decided to have the hi-jinks on the front with the position of the blue space on the borders on different corners.

The usual subsets returned, this time puzzle pieces of Warren Spahn circulated in wax packs, with Griffey Jr., and Randy Johnson being the prospects to chase.
Here's where it gets interesting, each regular base card has a back with * denotes led league and a back with * denotes led league *. Notice the second asterisk. Whether this was intentional or not, neither version is particularly rare, but something to chase for set and team collectors. However the fun doesn't stop there in 1989, in addition to this, each denotes version has on the back either Leaf INC., or Leaf INC without the period. Yes, they're really that pedantic. You might be best served opening these in a new tab, however where you're looking is right next to the thick black bar in the top-right.

Dig out a magnifying glass and you'll see either Leaf INC, or Leaf INC. with period, as well as the single/double asterisk around denotes. The rest of these years focus on the INC./INC variations, because with the slight exception of 1991, these were the only set wide editions that vary.

The only notable rookie was Juan Gonzalez at 1$, although they would increase the set to 715 cards - their most yet, and first change since going to 660 in 1982. The design is a boring red with a spattering of black dots along the side. Each base card has the INC/INC. edition, as well each all-star subset card had backs with differing text "Recent Major League Performance" like regular base cards, or the intended "All-Star Performance".

Donruss' release this year was a busy lined and speckle-like "paint streak" border with the usual name, team logo positioning. Another weak lineup year for rooks, this one highlighted by Chuck Knoblauch...and not much else. Willie Stargell got the puzzle treatment in a set that bumped it's total to 770. In addition to the trending INC/INC. versions, cards with the period present have two different border designs. Released in two series, the design changes background from blue to green between halves and is nothing of note oddity wise. As a side note, 1991 Leaf used Harmon Killebrew(Twinkie!) as their in wax puzzle! You'll have to trust that I flipped these, but as you can see there's a different pattern on the third Hrbek, and two INC.(with period) cards.
A much nicer white and blue design graced the fronts of this cheap 784 card set, Donruss also upped it's card stock, put out puzzle pieces for Rod Carew(Twinkie!) and put watermark counterfeit "proof" logos into the back design. Looking back who would have wanted to copy these? Lol. Two Indians from that filthy 90s Indians mini-dynasty feature as rooks, Jim Thome, and Kenny Lofton. Unless you think Todd Van Poppel is still the next big thing?
I only found three types(90 MLB, 90-91 NHL, 92 MLB), with 92 being the most rare. That said here's the breakdown:

90 MLB: 2x98, 100, 2x102, 4x103, 3x104, 105, 106, 107, 114, 3x116, 2x117, 120, 121, 122, 124, 126, 128, 2x129, 4x130, 3x131, 137, 138, 148, 2x149, 2x150, 153, 159, 2x168, 169, 2x173, 176, 2x178, 179, 180, 181, 182, 183, 3x184, 185, 2x186, 189, 2x190, 2x191, 2x193, 194, 199, 305, 310, 311, 312, 313, 314, 316, 318, 321, 322, 327, 329, 331, 333, 348, 359, 368, 369, 370, 379, 395, 398, 399, 516, 529, 2x541, 549, 549, 3x558, 559, 2x560, 562, 590, 595, 596.

90-91 NHL: 312, 314, 318, 320, 322, 339, 369, 381, 382, 623, 628, 630, 631, 639, 648, 650, 2x652, 658, 660, 667, 669, 671, 678, 2x681, 2x682, 2x683, 684, 691, 692, 693, 695, 695, 697, 699, 700.

92 MLB: 191

Some interesting notes:

There doesn't seem to be much overlap in numbering. I find this odd, I expected there to be many shared numbers, but it's almost as if each hundred block(100-199, 200-299, etc) are in their own group. All teams are represented, some more than others. The first number is 1990 MLB, second number is 1990-1991 NHL, the Twins and the Rangers were the only two teams with a 1992 MLB logo.

The normal '91 Upper Deck has the company name repeated several times horizontally, and if viewed from a different angle, '91's. This is the most common and easiest to spot. The others when viewed look smudged, and this is the best indicator you have a variant. 1990's design was the most common, and again the photo is blurry, but it features a repeated pattern of baseball's(which you can kind of make out the stitches and ball shape) and if viewed at a different angle, a very tiny pattern of '90's. This was the most common, and the easiest to differentiate. Upper Deck's 1990-91 Hockey features another pattern of '90's(however bigger and more noticeable than 1990 baseball) and crossed hockey sticks. It is also the second most common design that I found. 1992's design is the next most distinct, with a diamond shape and '1992' visible, however as the previous post stated, this was one of the rarest, I only found two in roughly 10,000 cards that I sorted. The rarest of them all was the Comic Ball 1 design, and I'm not even positive it's not just an error edition of the NHL release. In all the cards I checked, I only found one! ...and a Twins card at that! Score....err Upper Deck.musicfan87http://www.blogger.com/profile/06103605773602526887noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7773482446793633722.post-82311177777569993492013-09-05T21:53:00.000-07:002013-09-07T08:33:27.343-07:001991 UD Hologram errorsFor whatever reason, 1991 Upper Deck's base set came with several different holograms on the back of the cards. Ranging from the standard 1991 Upper Deck hologram, to the previous year's 1990 Upper Deck containing a repeated pattern of baseballs, very oddly 1990-1991 Upper Deck NHL's design with "90" and crossed hockey sticks, as well as 1992 Upper Deck's design. I'm not sure where each of these come from, I would hazard a guess that they're obviously from different print runs, but why would they make these errors? Chase $$$? Confuse collectors? Strange times were the 90's...

I recently broke down ~10,000 cards from the set that were thrown in 5,000 ct. boxes by my LCS, and pulled all of the Twins. Here's my breakdown of what I found:

Make of that what you will, but I find this kind of rarity breakdown cool. There is also apparently some with the Comic Ball 1 hologram, but I didn't see any of these in what I went through. Also, I wasn't looking but I did find a Rangers card with the 1992 hologram, #191 and a 1990-1991 NHL hologram for #666(spooky...). These are all from 1991 Upper Deck, with photos below.

75 regular 1991 UD designed hologram cards.
23 1990 MLB UD designed hologram cards(1x#167, 2x#170, 3x#360, 1x#377, 8x#501, 3x#503, 4x#505, 1x#659).
16 1990-1991 NHL UD designed hologram cards(8x#360, 5x#377, 2x#659, 1x#698).
1 1992 UD designed hologram card(1x#490).
Poor picture, but this is 1990 Upper Deck. Baseball's that rotate back and forth are most prominent, but I think I see a '90 also.
Editing to add, I found one among my dupes, that doesn't match any of these, and seems to match the Comic Ball Series 1 hologram! This one almost looks like the 1990-1991 Upper Deck NHL design, but the '90' in the hologram is much bigger(in person anyway...).
I was expecting there to be a ton of pre-high series cards and only a few 700+ cards. Just the way current sets have conditioned me, but I was pleasantly surprised to have equal sized stacks of pre-700 and cards between 700-800 ("hi-series"). Not pictured, I pulled both variations of the Rickey Henderson/Lou Brock "939" base, with and without date.
Huge stack of Twins to sort, resort, and triple check; as well as some "key" rookies. Cheepar being the highlight at ~2$, the rest under .50 cents.
Much like the Aaron Heroes of Baseball, the two Ryan/Henderson's came from the second box.
Interestingly, both other Washington franchises have almost the same amount of shared players. 19-17. One of these days I'll get around to how many players we shared with the original Washington Nationals/Senators, a list that includes many of our 1960s greats.

I made a trade with @SouthPawKersh22 for Twins, and ex-Twins to even the trade. I was surprised to see this one among them. I have a pretty good photographic memory of Twins rosters, and didn't remember him playing for us. Obviously a printing error, but by now you would think Topps would have a way of pulling detailed stats reliably. They've only been doing this for 60+ years, and this is the digital age. Hell, I'll help them install a LAMP setup, with web/php queries if needed...musicfan87http://www.blogger.com/profile/06103605773602526887noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7773482446793633722.post-61467767690835830252013-07-30T12:51:00.002-07:002013-07-30T12:51:58.125-07:002013 Bowman Platinum Team ChecklistHere's the Twins checklist for this years Bowman Platinum.
